Impact100 Essex Announces Equity Grants Recipients

Essex County, NJ, December 8, 2022 - Impact100 Essex, a collective philanthropic group funded by women in Essex County, announced that three Essex County nonprofits are the recipients of its 2022 Equity Grants. The recipients are:

● Perinatal Health Equity Initiative (PHEI)
● The Gem Project
● theAcademy365

This is the second year that Impact100 Essex has funded Equity Grants with $40,000 of unrestricted grant money available to small BIPOC-led nonprofits (nonprofits led by Black, Indigenous and other People of Color). Funding these grants has been a priority for Impact100 Essex in response to the need for greater equity in the field of grant making. Research shows that BIPOC-led nonprofits have been historically excluded from funding. The Perinatal Health Equity Initiative received a grant of $20,000 and the other two nonprofits received grants of $10,000 each.

Dr. Nastassia Harris, Founder and Executive Director of the Perinatal Health Equity Initiative (PHEI), said “We are honored and excited to be recognized with an Equity Grant for our mission to eliminate inequities in Black infant and maternal health. Receiving unrestricted grants is such a blessing as it gives us the autonomy to spend the funds in a way that we deem to be the most meaningful and impactful to drive our mission forward.”

Added Amanda A. Ebokosia, Founder and CEO of The Gem Project, “Being honored with an Equity Grant, and the flexibility it allows, gives us a chance to strengthen our infrastructure as an organization as we continue to offer paid high-quality fellowships for youth age 16-24 which foster youth leadership, peer-based mentoring and service-learning initiatives that take on a social justice approach."

Dr. Raberna (RB) Alverna, Founder and Executive Director of theAcademy365, said “The Equity Grant is important for our organization and provides a huge opportunity for us to imply our story and the story of our boys through our BlackBoy Storytellers Project. Our goal is to empower Black boys, long before they become men, to create new transformative narratives about themselves.”

Impact100 Essex announced the funding of these grants on Wednesday, December 7th at an end-of-year celebration at the Four City Brewing Company in Orange. These three nonprofits were chosen among a pool of over 20 applicants by Impact100 Essex members.
